Abstract

Accredited teacher education programs include historical and educational psychological foundations. Noticeably missing are women’s voices and theories in both disciplines. Explanations and descriptions of why it is imperative to incorporate historically notable and influential women into foundations coursework is the focus of this article.

Author Biographies

Lois McFadyen Christensen, University of Alabama at Birmingham

Lois McFadyen Christensen, PhD is a professor in the department of C&I at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the School of Education. She is an ECE/ELE social studies specialist at the graduate level and teaches child development and the history of early childhood education in the ECE doctoral program. Publications and presentations are often with doctoral students, in-service teachers and pertain to early childhood education, social studies - social justice, Reggio Emilia inspired approaches, and women’s issues.

 

Maxie Pate Kohler, University of Alabama at Birmingham

Maxie Pate Kohler is a professor in the department of Human Studies at UAB. She is the program coordinator for the department. As a specialist in developmental and psychological studies, most of her articles are published in this realm.

Jerry Aldridge, University of Alabama at Birmingham - Professor Emeritus

Jerry Aldridge is Professor Emertus of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he coordinated the Ph.D. program in early childhood education from 1998-2009. He is a former president of the United States National Chapter of the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP) and is currently a member of the publications committee of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) where he serves as editor of the Among the Periodical column and co-editor of the Focus on Teacher Education publication.
