Author Guidelines

As part of the submission process, all authors are required to check that their submission complies with the guidelines established by the journal. The submitted articles that do not follow these guidelines will be returned to the author/s.


A. Guidelines for authors

All the manuscripts should be sent through the Electronic platform where the Journal is based (Open Journal System). Submitted articles must be original and unpublished, and should not be under consideration for publication in other journals. Articles must be written in English.

In order to ensure originality of the received manuscripts, we recommend the authors to use programs of plagiarism detection. You can visit the following information on iThenticate:

The authors that send a manuscript to IJEP are invited to add their ORCID Id (If they have it). For authors without this ID, we invite them to register in ORCID in the following website:

IJEP will not publish more than one article with the same authors and co-authors in a lower interval than 24 months.

IJEP does not have neither Article Processing Charges (APCs), nor article submission charges.

Structure of the article:

Each original manuscript should have:

  • Title of the paper.
  • Abstract and title of the article in English and Spanish.
  • The key words in English and Spanish.
  • Text of the article.
  • Notes (at the end of the document bu before the list of references, with endnote formatting).
  • References.
  • Tables and figures (if any) in a separate file. In case of submitting images, authors must send them in jpeg format with the highest quality.

Style: All manuscripts should follow APA style (Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition, 2009) both in the text of the article and in the Reference list. These are some examples of references that follow APA style:

  • Lareau, A. (2004).Unequal childhoods: Class, race, and family life. Berkeley, CA: University of California.
  • Meyer, D. S. (1999). How the Cold War Was Really Won: The Effects of the Antinuclear Movements of the 1980s. In M. Giugni, D. McAdam, & Ch. Tilly (Eds.), How Social Movements Matter (pp. 182-203). Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press.
  • Lareau, A., & Horvat, E. M. (1999). Moments of social inclusion and exclusion: Race, class, and cultural capital in family-school relationships. Sociology of Education, 72, 37-53.

Length:  All submissions should have between 6.000 and 8.000 words and must be doubled-space throughout, including all suplmental materials. The files should be submitted in MS Word, WordPerfect o RTF formats.

Authorship: Candidates should avoid any clue about the authorship of the work submitted especially in the first pages of the manuscript. Name(s) of the author(s) must not appear in the manuscript. Information about the authors is included in the Electronic platform but not inside the manuscript file sent for review.

Abstract and Keywords: All manuscripts should include an abstract between 100 and 200 words and between three and five keywords defining the focus of the article. The abstract and the keywords must be sent in English and Spanish.

Running title: A running title of less than 25 characters should be included on the title page.

Notes: Try to avoid notes whenever possible. All notes should be endnotes and never footnotes, in order to avoid distracting elements. 

Tables and figures: Outlines, figures, graphs and tables will have a short explanatory title and will be sent on a separate document.

Language: Please, be aware that English and Spanish must be well used and the paper well written. It is responsibility of the authors to ensure that the manuscript that is submitted meets the language standards that are required for publication in a scientific journal.

Authors' obligations

- Authors are obliged to participate in peer review process.
- All authors have significantly contributed to the research.
- All authors are obliged to provide retractions or corrections of mistakes.
- Authors should ensure the inclusion of list of references and financial support if applicable.
- It is forbidden to publish same research in more than one journal.

Language editing

Hipatia Press requires an excellent language editing to potential authors of any of its journals. If the manuscript sent is written in a second or third language (i.e. English) of the authors, please refer or contact with a language editing service in order to avoid grammatical and speling errors.

Overall content criteria

Research manuscripts sent to IJEP must:

  • Address an important topic in the field of educational psychology, learning sciences;
  • Adequately incorporate existing, relevant and updated literature; and
  • Contribute to and expand our understanding of learning and development in diverse educational settings. 

Evaluation Procedure

- Authors must participate in peer review process. Therefore, they should avoid any clue about the authorship of the work submitted. Name(s) of the author(s) must not appear in the manuscript. Information about the authors is included in the Electronic platform of the journal but not inside the manucsript sent for review. Manuscripts not fulfilling these presentation norms might be rejected.

- All research articles, book reviews and reviews of dissertations submitted to IJEP are subjected to peer-review.

- Peer-review is performed by experts in the field, who point out relevant published work which is not yet cited.

- Reviewers for IJEP are asked to declare that have no conflict of interest, and thus their judgments are objective.

- Reviewed articles are treated confidentially

In a time period of 15 days maximum from the date of reception of the article, the editor of the journal will assign it to two external evaluators that will carry out a blind review of the article. (Double blind peer review).

Over the review period of the article, both the names of the autos as well as the evaluators will be anonymous.

The results of the evaluation will be send to the authors in a maximum period of 3 months from the date of reception.


B. Guidelines for presenting book reviews and review of doctoral dissertations

Preference will be given to reviews of relevant books published no more than two years before the review date. All book reviews and reviews of dissertations are subjected to peer-review. 

The following criteria will be used to assess the submissions:

- Specialization and prestige of the author or authors and of the publishing house.

- Scientific criteria employed by the publisher.

- Contemporary relevance of the topic in the international scientific community

- Update of the topic and year of publication.

- Reviews of popular books, text books and instructional materials are not accepted.

- The quality of the review will be evaluated, and the scientific specialization of the author(s) of the review will be considered. Reviews should never be longer than 700 words. They should begin with the bibliographical details of the book (name and surname of the author, year of publication, title of the book, place of publication, and publishers' name). The author (s) name (s) should appear at the end of the text.

Books proposed for review should be sent to C/ Claramunt, num. 4, local 2, 08030 Barcelona (Spain).


The International Journal of Educational Psychology is committed to meeting high standards of ethical conduct at all stages of the publication process. In our ethical standards and procedures, we set out general expectations for authors, editors, reviewers, publishers and society partners.

IJEP guarantees at all times the confidentiality of the evaluation process: the anonymity of the reviewers and the authors, the content evaluated, the report issued by the reviewers and any other communication issued by the editorial and advisory boards.

In the same vein, the confidentiality will be maintained before any clarifications or complaints that an author wishes to send to the committees of the journal or to the reviewers of the article or review.

IJEP declares its commitment for the respect and integrity of the works already published. For this reason, plagiarism is strictly prohibited in IJEP and texts that are identified as plagiarism or its content is fraudulent will be removed from the journal if they have already been published and will not be published if they are at the review process stage. Hipatia Press and IJEP editors will act, in these cases, as quickly as possible. By accepting the terms and agreements expressed by IJEP, authors must ensure that the article or review and the materials associated with them are original or do not infringe copyright. The authors also have to justify that, in case of a shared authorship, there was a full consensus of all the authors affected and that the article or book review has not been previously presented or published in other journals.

IJEP editors will publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when needed.
